Bismarck was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants. The city was named for Bismarck, a city in Germany, and the first president of the United States, George Washington Carver.

Bismarck is located in the eastern part of the state and is bordered by the states of South Dakota to the south, Minnesota to the east, and North Dakota to the north.
