On the left of the image one can see sappers constructing an improvised causeway across the stream, whilst on the right the British troops can be seen moving towards the village of Dieteren. This sketch was made by the Illustrated London News special artist, Captain Bryan de Grineau, who was stationed with the British Second Army in Holland

Berlin fell to the Russian Army on 2nd May 1945, after a battle which lasted 17 days. Given the demeanour of the men riding on the tank, it is safe to assume that this photograph was taken after the German capitulation
