Soviet Heavy Tank in Berlin; Second World War, 1945

Photograph showing a Soviet heavy tank moving through Berlin, with the Brandenburg Gate in the background, May 1945. Berlin fell to the Russian Army on 2nd May 1945, after a battle which lasted 17 days. Given the demeanour of the men riding on the tank, it is safe to assume that this photograph was taken after the German capitulation.

First Army attack on Longstop Hill, April 1943

Lantern slide showing infantry moving up for the First Army attack on Longstop Hill, April 1943; Churchill tanks which took part in the operation can be seen in the background. From a collection of British official war photographs relating to the 78th Division that were given to the 78th Division Battleaxe Club, who then developed slides of them. Associated with World War Two, North Africa (1940-1943). Churchill tanks can be seen in the background as the infantry advance. Longstop Hill, located a few miles northeast of Medjez el Bab, was one of the last major obstacles blocking the Allied advance on Tunis. It had been the scene of fierce fighting the previous December and was finally captured in April 1943. Date: 1943
