Suffragette Board Game PANK-A-SQUITH

A suffragette board game called Pank-A-Squith which was first advertised in the pages of Votes for Women, October 1909. It was described as a highly artistic TABLE GAME that helps to spread the movement. A suffragette tries to get from her home to the Houses of Parliament facing a series of challenges and various incidents. There are 50 squares, each having a detailed and colourful vignette, showing 10 Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park Demonstrations, Bow St. Court, Queen's Hall, Clements Inn, Mrs. Pankhurst, Inspector Jarvis, Prime Minister Asquith, Tax Resistance, The Suffragette Dreadnought, Hunger Strikers, Holloway Prison and the forging of suffragette brand handcuffs. There are six metal suffragette figures with sashes and scrolls. The base of the board is of purple, white and green stripes. Date: 1909

The new coffee tavern at Bradford

Interior and exterior views of the new coffee tavern in Bradford, inaugurated by W. E Forster, M.P in 1879. The Coffee Tavern movement was a Victorian effort to get people out of pubs. Proposed by the Bradford councillor, alderman and magistrate, Frederick Priestman, the tavern was opened at the junction of Westgate, Ivegate and Kirkgate and was an immediate commercial success serving food as well as coffee. Within a few years there were 28 branches in the Bradford district but with over 400 licensed beer sellers in the area, how much of a sobering effect they had on the local population is debatable

Girls waving at an early Aviator flying overhead

The Aviator is the only man girls look up to A very beautifully drawn and interesting postcard, with strong leaning toward the Women's Suffrage movement during this period in the United Kingdom. These strong and confident women see that the only time it is necessary to look up at a man is when he is flying above in an aeroplane. Date: circa 1910
