British Migrants to Australia on board ship - 1920s

In the 1920s, the Australia Government was keen to develop regional areas. Prime Minister Stanley Bruce considered there were three things necessary for this: labour, money and markets and for these Australia depended on Britain. British migrants were encouraged to settle in Australia. The Australian Government paid most of their fare and, like the soldiers before them (who had arrived after WW1), some were assisted to establish farms, with often limited success. Date: circa 1920s

Migrant agricultural workers family

Migrant agricultural worker's family. Seven hungry children. Mother aged thirty-two. Father is a native Californian. Destitute in pea picker's camp, Nipomo, California, because of the failure of the early pea crop. These people had just sold their tent in order to buy food. Of the twenty-five hundred people in this camp most of them were destitute. Photograph shows Florence Thompson with two of her children as part of the Migrant Mother series
