Salvador Allende, President of Chile
The 29th President of Chile, Salvador Allende (Salvador Isabelino del Sagrado Corazn de Jess Allende Gossens, 1908-1973). Seen here accompanied by armed guards in the Presidential (Moneda) Palace, Chile. Allende was deposed by General Augusto Pinochet in a military coup on 11 September 1973, and committed suicide the same day. Above the photograph is a reference to a German documentary film, Im Feuer Bestanden, made by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann in 1978, depicting the final hours in the Moneda Palace.

Leo Frankel, Hungarian born Marxist follower. After spells in Austria and Germany, he settled in Paris, where he was imprisoned for his political activities. Released following the 1870 revolution he helped to organise the uprising in the Paris Commune. When the Commune was overthrown he fled to London, before returning to Austria, from where he was extradited to Hungary. In 1878 he went back to Paris to work as Friedrich Engels assistant. He died in 1896 in Paris. Date: 1844 - 1896
