Daily Mail War Map, WW1

A fold out war map issued by the Daily Mail in the early weeks of the First World War. The map offers statistics regarding the manpower strength of each of the warring nations, as well as the number of battleships and food stores each had. While the Triple Entente of Britain, France and Russia could boast 9, 380, 000 men (of which Britain comprised just 380, 000), the Triple Alliance numbered 9, 500, 000. The map was intended to be marked with Philips flag pins in ten different colours so that civilians could chart the progress of the campaign. Date: 1914

Airmail postcards at Gamages, London

People at Gamages in Holborn, Central London, addressing postcards and posting them in the special London Aerial Postbox, in time for the first aerial mail service from Hendon to Windsor and back again. The service flew on 9 September 1911. King George V gave permission for the aeroplanes to land in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Gustav Hamel was the first pilot to deliver by airmail. During September 1911 the Grahame-White company operated an experimental air mail service for two weeks between Hendon and Windsor. As well as commemorating the coronation of King George V, and raising money for charity, the event publicised the possibilities of the aeroplane as a means of transport

Heath Robinson Bedroom 4 of 4

Heath Robinson Does Away with Servants - Patent Applied for by "The Sketch" in the Bedroom. A bedroom, which is a typically Heath Robinson design, with a system of pulleys, levers and machinery allowing multiple tasks to be carried out with the least effort. Mother, Father and baby all in separate beds, yet still able to fetch the morning mail, newspaper, telephone, pour tea (kept hot from the gas lamp), select a dressing gown, slippers, and even a cigarette from a spring loaded box, and no need for servants. Even the pendulum of the clock serves as a handy baby rocker. Please note: Credit must appear as Courtesy of the Estate of Mrs J.C.Robinson/Pollinger Ltd/ILN/Mary Evan"
