FAIR HELEN (Helen of Kirconnell - Kirconnel - Kirkconnel) British ballad of Scottish origin telling the tragic tale of Helen Irving (Fair Helen of Kirkconnel) daughter of the Laird of Kirkconnel, who was beloved by two gentlemen of the district. Meeting one of them at night by the river Kirtle they were spied by the other jealous lover (Adam Fleming) who appeared on the opposite bank. He aimed his gun at his rival, Helen threw herself in front of her lover and received the bullet herself, dying in his arms
