Women WW1 Work

A group photograph of 'View Room Girls' at Thornycrofts, the shipbuilding and engineering firm which was based at Woolston, Hampshire. The card is dated by the sender, 27th May 1917 and is marked 'K.A. Aylward, Basingstoke, as the photographic studio. Thorneycrofts were shipbuilders and also made military vehicles. Date: 1917

The Black Stone at the Kaaba, Mecca, Saudi Arabia - revered by Muslims as an Islamic relic, which according to Muslim tradition dates back to the time of Adam and Eve. Originally set intact into the Kaaba's wall by the Islamic Prophet Muhammad in the year 605 A.D., five years before his first revelation. The Kaaba is the holiest site in the Islamic World and a place of pilgrimage attracting many millions of Muslims each year from all over the world. Considered desirable that each Muslim should make the Hajj (pilgrimage) at least once in their lifetime. To Muslims the Kaaba is considered the centre of not just the world, but all Universes. Date: circa 1920s

Arhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra, Ajmere, India

Arhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra, Ajmere. Built in the 13th century by the first Muslim Sultan in India, Qutb-ud-Din Aibak. The site of a religious fair that lasted for 2.5 days and it is therefore also known as the 'Hut of Two-and-a-Half Days'. Another Sultan, Iltutmish, used stones from nearby Jain and Hindu temples to build a screen of seven arches in front of the main hall.
