Page from the Sketch with photographs of one of the most wonderful parties of modern times held at the Ritz Hotel in Paris by Prince Alexis Mdivani and his wife, formerly Miss Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress. The event was to celebrate Princess Alexis's twenty second birthday and was also a farewell to their friends before the Prince's departure for India to play polo.

Queen Marys visit to Poplar Schools at Brentwood

In 1906, the Poplar Union (East London) established a Schools site located between Shenfield and Hutton, near Brentwood, Essex. As well as cottage homes, each housing 30 pauper children, the site had its own schools, infirmary, chapel, swimming pool etc. Here, Queen Mary watches the boys marching past during her visit in 1919. To her left is the Poor Law reformer George Lansbury who, as a member of the Poplar Board of Guardians, had been instrumental in setting up the Schools
