West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth, Middlesex

The West Middlesex Hospital, originally erected as an infirmary for the Brentford Union workhouse on Twickenham Road, Isleworth. Between 1931 and 1948 it was known as the West Middlesex County Hospital, then reverted back to the West Middlesex Hospital.

Raymond de Trafford riding with Prince of Wales

Selling War Certificates, Birchington

Hannah Powell-Cotton, in her uniform as Commandant of Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment, sitting at a table selling War Certificates during War Weapons Week, a three day event held in Birchington 23-25 May 1918. The family at the table is that of Jack Hedge, Masseur at the Quex Park VAD Hospital. He is standing behind his daughter, and his wife is taking a piece of paper from Hannah Powell-Cotton. The purpose of War Weapons Week, which was held in many localities, was to raise money for the purpose of biuying military weapons for the war effort. Thje aim in Birchington was to raise enough money to buy an aeroplane. The event raised over 10, 000. This photograph is in the archive collection related to the Quex Park VAD Hospital. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Major Powell-Cotton was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organising the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. Date: 1918
