Madame Henriette Caillaux, wife of finance minister Joseph Caillaux, who in 1914 shot Gaston Calmette, editor of 'Le Figaro' for attacking Caillaux's private life. The case was a sensation and reported in all the newspapers but the event was soon eclipsed by the outbreak of the First World War. Date: 1914

Drawing shows the balloon Jean Bart, flown by Albert and Gaston Tissandier descending over the Seine with tow ropes hanging into the river where landing was attempted during the Siege of Paris.
