John Maclean, Scottish teacher and revolutionary socialist

John Maclean (1879-1923), Scottish schoolteacher and revolutionary Marxist socialist. He was imprisoned for his opposition to the First World War, and lost his teaching post, after which he became a full-time Marxist lecturer and organiser, and later founded the Scottish Labour College. In prison again in 1918 after a conviction for sedition, he went on hunger strike and was force fed, which contributed to his early death.

Giant tortoise being fed at Tring Park

In 1897 Walter Rothschild despatched explorer Charles Harris to the Galapagos islands to collect a large number of giant tortoises, aiming in part to protect them from potential extinction from hunting. Eventually 144 giant tortoises from Galapagos and Aldabra in the Seychelles ended up at Rothschild home grounds of Tring Park. Date: 1897

Alison Neilans Suffragette. Alison Roberta Noble Neilans (1884-1942) portrait. Member of the Women's Freedom League, Church League for Women's Suffrage, and also worked with Sylvia Pankhurst in East London. Imprisoned, hunger striker and was forcibly fed. Wearing the W.F.L prisoner's brooch - a silver stylised 'Holloway' symbol. Date: circa 1910
