How Captain Scott is attacking the South Pole

Double page spread from The Sphere, showing a map of Antarctica along with the route of Captain Scott and his team of ponies, dogs and men in their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Savages feel our muscle, Taiwan, 1890

Natives of the hill country of Bankimsing, Formosa(today Taiwan), explore the possessions of some English visitors that they encounter. One tests the muscle of a Englishman, whilst two others try on a shirt and pith helmet. Another rejoices in the discovery of an umbrella. The natives entered the house of an old Spanish missionary priest, where the English visitors were staying. Sketched by Mr. E. Hornby Grimani Date: 1890

Adeliee Penguins, Cape Adare

Adeliee penguin photographs taken during Scott's British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913, also known as the Terra Nova expedition, by expedition surgeon Murray Levick. Levick was part of Campbell's party at Cape Adare, also known as the Northern Party. Levick studied the sexual and rearing behaviour of Adeliee penguins during their breeding season. These photographs were taken by Levick to support this study. Date:
