Lady Idina Sackville and Mr Euan Wallace Featured Print

Lady Idina Sackville and Mr Euan Wallace

Lady Idina Sackville (1893-1955), daughter of Muriel, Countess de la Warr and granddaughter of Lord Brassey, pictured on her engagement to the handsome Mr Euan Wallace of the 2nd Life Guards. The couple were married on 25th November 1913 but divorced in 1919. Wallace would be the first of Idina's five husbands. Five-times married Idina would gain notoriety as part of the Happy Valley Set when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. With her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she inspired the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitford's novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in The Green Hat by Michael Arlen. Date: 1913

Alexei of Russia during wartime Featured Print

Alexei of Russia during wartime

Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaievich of Russia (1904-1918) in field uniform. While other Royal children performed small engagements or were photographed to raise money for war charities, Alexei actually went to headquarters with his father, Tsar Nicholas II, and made several tours of the front line. Alexei was fascinated by all he saw and spoke naturally with the men; they in turn were curious to see him and his presence made a deep impression - though concern for his health (he was a haemophiliac) was a concern for his father. A bright boy, with a strong character, Alexei was tragically assassinated by Bolsheviks, along with the rest of the Imperial family on 17th July 1918 at Ekaterinburg
