Mrs Caudles Curtain Lectures - Mr Caudle late to bed

"Pretty Time of night to come to bed Mr Caudle. Ugh! Enough to give any woman her death. I'm sure." (Mrs Caudle's Lectures) First published in "Punch" in 1845, the book Mrs Caudle's Lectures consisted of Mrs C giving petty lectures to her unfortunate husband - enacted in the matrimonial bed at the close of each day when he is compelled to lie and listen. This card plays upon this book with a new slant of cautionary tale (featuring Mr and Mrs Goose), warning against the dangers of arriving home late! Date: 1914

Flag Selling, World War One by George Ranstead Featured Print

Flag Selling, World War One by George Ranstead

A young and pretty flag seller seems to be falling prey to the attentions of a rakish type who isn't in uniform, much to the disapproval of an older, matronly lady. Drawn by George Ranstead, an amateur soldier artist of the Great War, who served in the Army Pay Corps. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period.
circa 1916
