Bede finishing his translation of the bible

Bede (673-735) - A monk at the Northumbrian monastry of Saint Peter who was the first person to write a history of Britain. Here he is shown on his deathbed dictating the translation of the bible to another monk so that it could be finished before he died. He died just a few minutes after the translation was complete. Date: circa 650

Baroness Orczy in garden of her Riviera villa

Baroness Orczy (1865-1947), playwright, novelist and creator of the Scarlet Pimpernel. She began writing in 1900, and her world-famous "The Scarlet Pimpernel" was published in 1905. Her works include 54 historical romances. She was married to Mr. Montague Barstow, who died in 1943. Pictured posing by a pergola in the garden of her French Riviera home, Villa Bijou, where she did a lot of entertaining. Date: 1921
