Phil Piratin and William Gallacher, Communist MPs

Philip (Phil) Piratin (1907-1995), member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and MP for Mile End, East London (1945-1950). He opposed the anti-semitism of Mosley's British Union of Fascists, and was a defender of tenants rights. His parliamentary seat was abolished when boundary changes were made, and he was defeated when standing for the new Stepney constituency in 1950. Sitting was an inspirational Sioux Chief, who together with Crazy Horse, defeated Custer and tried to prevent the American Indians being forced into reservations. He escaped to Canada in 1879, but returned to American in 1881 under an amnesty. He was shot just after this image was published during an Indian uprising
