Photograph of Napoleon III (1808-1873), formerly Emperor of the French following his death while in exile in Britain. The nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, he attempted coups in 1836 and 1840 before becoming president of the Second Republic following the revolution of 1848. He became Emperor in 1852 and allied with Britain and Turkey during the Crimean War of 1854-6. He was captured at Sedan following the disastrous Franco-Prussian war of 1870 and exiled to Chislehurst in Kent with his wife, the Empress Eugenie and his son, the Prince Imperial.
