Damage to Canterbury Cathedral Library, WW2 - Baedeker Blitz

"Canterbury under fire" - Damage sustained to the Cathedal LIbrary examined by Dr. Hewlett Johnson, Dean of Canterbury, by bombing on the city by German planes of the luftwaffe during WW2. The Baedeker Blitz (or Baedeker raids) were targeted raids, chosen for hitting sites of cultural or historical significance, rather than for any military value. The raid on Canterbury (which coincided with the RAF's 1, 000 bomber raid on Cologne), involved 77 bombers, dropping 40 tons of bombs, resulting in 43 deaths. This raid hit Canterbury on 31st May, 1942. Date: 1942

Lady Mercy Greville

Lady Mercy Greville (1904-1968). The daughter of Francis Richard Charles Guy Greville, 5th Earl of Warwick and Frances Evelyn Maynard. She married, firstly, Basil Herbert Dean, son of Harding Hewer Dean, on 1st July 1925. They were divorced in 1933. She married, secondly, Patrick Henry Noel Gamble, son of Very Rev. Reginald Gamble, on 14th February 1933. They were divorced in 1936. She married, thirdly, Richard Maurice Marter, son of Captain W. M. Marter, in 1936. A signed portrait of Mr V Gennaro of Gennaro's Rendezvous Restaurant on Dean Street, Soho, London. Gennaro's would later become the site for the Groucho Club. The Restaurant was used as a film set for a number of movies throughout the 1930s. Date: circa 1940
