Girl Guides: Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret send courier
Princess Elizabeth, patrol leader in the Buckingham Palace Company, sends a message by courier pigeon to Lady Baden Powell at Guide Headquarters. It was one of the many messages sent by girl guides all over the country on the occasion of "thinking day", which marks the birthday of the late Lord Baden Powell. Founder of the Boy Scouts, and his wife.Princess Margaret holds the pigeon container, while Princess Elizabeth writes the message, at Windsor. Date: 20th February 1943

The Dogs of War - training messenger dogs at Shoeburyness
Page from the Illustrated London News illustrating the work of the British War Dog School at Shoeburyness on the Essex coast in training dogs to become messengers at the front during the First World War. The school, which later moved to the New Forest in the latter stages of the war, was established by Major Edwin Richardson, the renowned dog trainer. Date: 1918

Airspeed AS5 Courier, G-ACVF, during rebuilding at Rochford, was the only Courier to survive WW2 and operated on pleasure flights and taxi work for East Anglian Flying Services, later Channel Airways, of Southend until scrapped in 1949
