Bonzo palms the pill by George Studdy Featured Print

Bonzo palms the pill by George Studdy

Bonzo palms the pill -- he is given a pill, but only pretends to take it. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans

The Pot-Hunter by George Studdy Featured Print

The Pot-Hunter by George Studdy

Bonzo here shows what might have been, had his pedigree been equal to his popularity. A cute and contented looking Bonzo the dog sucks on a dummy as he sits among the numerous trophies and prizes he has won at dog shows - or at least would have done if only he had not been a mongrel. Shadow drawing. C.H. Bennett, A Native

A Native of these islands'. This scruffy, dirty looking but contented old character is apparently a stranger to soap and water, which is ironic as he casts the perfect shadow of a wash basin and jug. Illustration from a series of shadow portraits of fictional characters by Charles H Bennett entitled Shadow and Substance, 1860
