Capture of the Cato Street Conspirators
The capture of Cato Street conspirators in their hayloft hideout as depicted by George Cruikshank in 1820. Police entering the loft shouted, We are Peace Officers. Lay down your arms. Police officer Richard Smithers was stabbed by the gang's leader, Arthur Thistlewood. Smithers gasped, "Oh God, I am..." and lost consciousness, dying soon afterwards
