Patriotic poster, Buy British campaign -- Give and Take, Empire Products for Britain, British Manufactured Goods for the Empire, Buy British and help British labour at home and overseas. Part of a government campaign to tackle a balance of payments crisis, reinforced by a speech by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), promoting the importance of buying from British farms and factories to reduce unemployment and boost the national economy, with the second choice being to buy from the British Empire. Norman Hartnell & Duchess of Gloucester at Mansion House
Sir Norman Bishop Hartnell (1901-1979) British couturier and favourite fashion design of the Queen and Queen Mother, seen greeting another royal patron, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (1901-2004), whose wedding dress he designed, at a reception of fashion buyers from overseas held at the Mansion House in the City of London in 1955. The reception was given by Lady Pamela Berry (formerly Lady Pamela Smith) and was attended by London's leading designers, overseas buyers, Press representatives and the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Peter Thorneycroft and his wife.
