Town Crier in pony and trap, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex
James Smith, Town Crier of Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, in pony and trap. Seen here passing the butcher's shop owned by J Potter, where cuts of meat are on display. James, an ex-naval man, would for one shilling cry the details of any forthcoming event all around the town. When he had finished his notices he would remove his hat and say: God save the Queen and all her loyal subjects.
