A Holiday in the Broads (2/2) Featured Print

A Holiday in the Broads (2/2)

A splendid set of two postcards depicting aspects of two ladies' holiday to the Norfolk Broads. In this second photograph, the ladies are watching the actions of a mechanical scoop, which is extracting peat from the Broads. The Romans first exploited the rich peat beds of the area for fuel, and in the Middle Ages the local monasteries began to excavate the peat lands as a 'turbary' business, selling fuel to Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Turbary, which is more fully expressed legally as common of turbary, is the right to cut turf from a turbary on a common or in some cases, another person's land.
