The Baker's Arms Public House, Leyton, London

A wonderful colour postcard of the suburbs of London in the early 1900s - a tram approaches The Baker's Arms Public House in Leyton, London.A district on the boundary of Leyton and Walthamstow is known as Baker's Arms after this pub (in the London Borough of Waltham Forest). The pub (which added an extra storey during the 20th century and only closed in 2010 - now a Paddy Power betting shop) stood at the junction of High Road Leyton, Hoe Street (both A112) and Lea Bridge Road (A104). The pub's name was derived from the nearby almshouses for members of London's baking trade, which were completed in 1866. Date: circa 1900

The University of East London Stratford Campus is based in and around University House, a Grade II* listed building (formerly the West Ham Technical Institute), located in Stratford, London in the London Borough of Newham. Designed by Gibson and Russell in the Renaissance Revival architecture style, with added carving introduced by the foreman of construction W.B. Rhind. The frontage towards Romford Road shows figures representing Fine art and science; towards Water Lane are figures symbolical of Literature, Engineering, and Music; two female figures adorn the main entrance, and there are four figures in the niches of the square tower representing Perseverance and Industry.
