Josephine Baker (1906-1975)
Josephine Baker began her career as an entertainer dancing on Broadway. She travelled to Paris in 1925 to star in La Revue Negre. Her exotic dance style and costume made her an instant hit. Josephine Baker went on to become the most successful American artist in France starring in films and having musical hits. During World War Two she worked undercover for the French Resistance whilst entertaining the troops. Racial prejudice prevented her stardom travelling with her to America. Her talents were not fully appreciated in the US until the end of her career. Josephine Baker died after having a stroke in 1975. 20, 000 people lined the streets of Paris to watch the funeral procession. Date: 17th October 1928
