Hall of Man sculptures by Malvina Hoffman

Double page spread from The Illustrated London News featuring editorial and photographs relating to the range of sculptures by the American female sculptor, Malvina Hoffman. The sculptures depicted all anthropological types of living races for the Field Museum of Natural History at Chicago. Hoffman was born in New York in 1887 and studied sculpture under Rodin. An example of her work in London is the group on Bush House in Kingsway dedicated to the friendship of English-speaking peoples"

Piltdown man reconstructed Featured Print

Piltdown man reconstructed

The Piltdown man sketched by A. Forestier after Professor Keith's reconstruction, and an inset showing an alterative reconstruction after Dr. A. Smith Woodward. The discovery, made by Charles Dawson in a gravel deposit near Piltdown Common, of part of a jaw and a portion of the skull, aroused great interest. Presumed to be the remains of the oldest known inhabitant of Europe, the Piltdown man was thought to be the missing link, until it was found to be an elaborate hoax in the early 1950s

Comparison of British & German skull shapes, WW1

Long-head versus short-head: Opposite types of humanity which are fighting for opposite ideals. A diagram to demonstrate the inherent differences in skull shapes between the British and German people, contrasting the dolichocephalic, long-headed, Briton, with the brachycephalic, or short-headed, Teuton. The diagram illustrated an article in The Graphic by Dr Arthur Keith, which claimed that the physiognomy of the two races was inherently different, a theory expounded during the First World War. Date: 1915
