Engraving of a trial of various anchor designs, held at the Royal Dockyard Sheerness, from the Illustrated London News, 17th July 1852. This trial was held in the presence of mercantile shipowners and an Admiralty committee, in order to test the holding power of a number of anchors. These included the New Admiralty, Aylen's, Rodger's, Mitcheson's, Honibal's, Isaac's, Lenox's and Trotman's improved Porter anchor. Trotman's anchor was declared the winner

Captain Jerninghams Anchor-Firing Mortar, 1846

Engraving of an experiment to test Captain Jerningham's idea to assist the launching of lifeboats. The launching of lifeboats from a beach into heavy breaking surf was often dangerous and sometimes impossible due to the strength of the waves. Captain Jerningham felt that if a mortar were used to fire one or two anchors out beyond the surf, a lifeboat could haul on these anchor lines to pull itself through the breakers and into the calmer water beyond
