Royal group at Rosenau Castle in Coburg gathered to celebrate the engagement of the Czarevitch Nicholas (later Czar Nicholas II) to Princess Alix of Hesse. The engagement took place at the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. Each member of the family is annotated, and includes Prince Alfred of Edinburgh, Prince and Princess Louis of Battenberg (the latter formerly Princess Victoria of Hesse), Grand Duke & Duchess Serge of Russia (the latter formerly Princess Elizabeth of Hesse), Princess Marie of Edinburgh (Crown Princess of Romania), Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh and Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia (the latter formerly Princess Irene of Hesse). Rosenau was the birthplace of Albert, the Prince Consort.

Princess Alexandra of Denmark lands at Gravesend on Saturday 7 March 1863 for her marriage to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. The event was legendary with the beautiful 'daughter of the Sea-King' met by her future husband, aswell as no less than sixty 'Maids of Kent' who scattered flowers in her path. Alexandra's parents, King Christian IX of Denmark and his wife, Queen Louise can be seen following the couple as well as her two sisters, Dagmar (later Maria Feodorovna, Empress of Russia) and Thyra (later Duchess of Cumberland) Date: 1863

Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia

Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia (1872-1918), formerly Princess Alix of Hesse, married Tsar Nicholas II in 1894 shortly before his accession to the throne. She was murdered by Bolsheviks at Ekaterinburg on 17th July 1918. The caption reads 'Few people occupy a more interested position in the crisis than the Tsar's Consort, for she is not only a German herself, but is also the first cousin of our King, the sister-in-law of our late First Sea Lord, and the sister-in-law of the Kaiser's sailor brother, Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia, who is trying to destroy the Russian Navy...She and her daughters are taking an enthusiastic part in nursing the wounded'.
