The military review - the camp at Chobham

The military review - the camp at Chobham. The troops returning to their encampment after a field-day, 1853.Coloured tinted lithograph by Edmund Walker after Louis Haghe (1806-1885), published by Ackermann and Co, 8 Oct 1853.In addition to providing practical training for the Army, Chobham Camp was designed to be a military spectacle entailing splendid royal reviews. Lord Hardinge credited Prince Albert with the formation of the camp and the royal family visited it frequently. A number of marquees and small tents were erected on Magnet Hill, the camp Headquarters, which served as a banqueting hall and suite of apartments for the royal party and distinguished guests.Even before the camp was complete, it had become part of the social ?Season?, attracting crowds on their way to the Ascot Races. Once the regiments had arrived, Chobham drew large numbers of visitors who flocked to witness this exhibition of British military prowess with its glittering array of uniforms. In an attempt to profit from the huge popularity of Chobham Camp, a number of artists and printmakers produced pictorial souvenirs whilst The Illustrated London News published a diary of each day's events. Date: 1853

C Ward. Quex Park Vad Hospital

C Ward, Quex Park VAD Hospital. This ward was located in the second gallery of the Powell-Cotton Museum. B Ward, in the first gallery, was through the archway on the left of the photograph. On the right, behind the beds is a covered large glass case which contained taxidermy mounts of a fight between a lion and a buffalo. This still survives at the Museum today (2015), in the same position. In the corner of the far wall is standing the foreleg (bones) of an African elephant. To the right of that the glass of a large diorama has been partly screened. In addition to the patients, the two staff members of the VAD are Jack Hedge, Hospital Masseur and Clara Buss. There were fifteen beds in this room. The photograph was one of a number commissioned by Major Powell-Cotton from AH Siminson, photographer of St Lawrence, Ramsgate. It bears his embossing stamp in the bottom right corner. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: 1917

The Duke of Edinburgh opening the Seamens Orphanage in Live

Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, opening the Seamen's Orphanage, Liverpool in 1870. The Liverpool Seamen's Orphan Institution was established in order to provide care and education for the many Liverpool children who lost families at sea. A group of Liverpool merchants and shipowners funded the establishment of the orphanage in 1869, in a temporary rented building on Duke Street. In 1870 Liverpool City Council donated land next to Newsham Park and a large building was erected to house and educate the orphans. The building had separate wings for boys and girls but shared dining facilities, hospital and classrooms. All orphans were taught reading and writing. In addition girls learnt knitting and needlework and boys were instructed in carpentry. The Institution also made an agreement with the Indefatigable training ship, to train boys after leaving the orphanage
