Essex Yeomanry Memorial, German Bunker Gold Beach
The Essex came ashore here at O730 on D-Day equipped with Sherman DD (Duplex Drive) tanks and Sextons (self-propelled 25 pdr guns). Yeomanry Regiments are rarely mentioned in the accounts of D-Day - the Official History does not mention the Essex at all. They do have a Memorial in the grounds of the Bayeux Museum, as does their partner Regiment the Notts (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry. Date: 2009

War Weapons Week and London Fire Brigade fireboats, WW2
The London Fire Brigade's fireboat Massey Shaw (which took part in the Dunkirk evacuations) and a fire float are moored at Westminster pier whilst their crews are promoting War Weapons Week. This scheme encouraged people to save in various Government accounts such as War Bonds or Defence Bonds. After the withdrawal from Dunkirk much of the army's equipment was left on the French beaches, and money was needed to re-equip them. Here London firefighters are trying to encourage the public to support the War Week scheme
