First Remembrance Day 1919

On 11th November 1919, the first anniversary of Armistice day, the Britsh nation, in reponse to an invitation by King George V, stood in silence for two minutes at 11 o'clock in remembrance of all who had given their lives in the First World War. Here is a photograph of King George V, laying a wreath at cenotaph a monument erected in honour of people whose remains are elsewhere, located in Whitehall, London.

Australian troops counter-attack at Amiens, WW1

Australian troops hold the line at Villers Bretonneux nine miles east of Amiens during a German attack during the Battle of Amiens in April 1918. The image was an accurate impression by Sphere special artist, Fortunino Matania, having been reconstructed with the help of eyewitness accounts and official material. In the foreground, an infantryman, his rifle slung over his shoulder, takes over a Lewis Gun whose crew had been put out of action. Behind that can be seen another soldier hitting a German with his tin helmet (having already strangled another with his bare hands) while a third German attempts to flee down a railway cutting but is stopped by the gun fire of the Australian officer's batman. The Chelsea Arts Club Dazzle Ball

A flamboyant fancy-dress ball given by the Chelsea Arts Club at the Albert Hall. It was based on the principles of Dazzle, the method of camouflage used during the war in the painting of ships to help them in escaping from the attacks of submarines. Date: 1919
