HMS Leviathan, Drake-class armoured cruiser

Royal Navy - HMS Leviathan, a Drake-class armoured cruiser. HMS Leviathan was one of four Drake-class armoured cruisers built for the Royal Navy around 1900. She was assigned to the China Station upon completion and then served in the Mediterranean Fleet in 1905-06. She was assigned to the 7th Cruiser Squadron in 1907 before she was briefly reduced to reserve. Leviathan was recommissioned in 1909 for service with the 4th Cruiser Squadron before she was placed in reserve in 1913. Recommissioned in mid-1914, she was assigned to the 6th Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet at the beginning of World War I. She spent most of the rest of the year searching for German commerce raiders and escorting convoys before she became flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron. In early 1915, she was reassigned to the 6th Cruiser Squadron before she became flagship of the North America and West Indies Station in March. Leviathan retained that position for the next three years until she was relieved as flagship in early 1918 and began escorting convoys from North America to Britain. She was placed in reserve in 1919 and sold for scrap in early 1920. Date: circa 1910

HMAS Yarra - River-Class Torpedo Destroyer

Royal Australian Navy - HMAS Yarra / HMS Yarra, a River-Class Torpedo Destroyer, making way at speed, on the River Clyde during manufacturers trials in 1910. Yarra was built by William Denny & Bros., Dumbarton in 1910, to a 1909 order, for the Commonwealth Naval Forces (the predecessor of the RAN). Yarra was temporarily commissioned into the Royal Navy on completion in 1910 and handed over to Australian control on arrival in Australia. From 1914 to 1917, Yarra was involved in wartime patrols in the Pacific and South East Asian regions, before she and her sister ships were transferred to the Mediterranean Sea for anti-submarine operations. She returned to Australia in 1919 and was used primarily to train naval reservists. Decommissioned into reserve then reactivated on five occasions between 1919 and 1928, Yarra was paid off for the final time in 1928 and taken to Cockatoo Island Dockyard for stripping, before being sunk as a target ship in 1932. Date: 1910

Eleanor Nellie Souray (1886 - 1931), Lady Torrington. A popular stage actress and Gaiety girl, she was a number of performers who married into the peerage during the Edwardian era, meeting George Master Byng, 9th Viscount Torrington at the races in Ostend. The couple's marriage soon soured and they divorced. After running a stud farm and then opening the Vortex club in Soho, Nellie was in serious debt and killed herself by leaving a gas ring on in her flat in December 1931. Date: 1910
