Tournament in the Vatican, Italian School

Tournament in the Vatican, Italian School. An 18th century painting depicting a 16th century event. The tournament took place in the Belvedere courtyard during the Pontificate of Pius IV, on the occasion of the marriage of Count Annibale Altemps, the Pope's nephew, to Signorina Ortenze Borromei. The painting shows the Vatican before the dome of St Peter's was completed -- the half-built dome can be seen on the right, with many men at work on it. Date: 1565
