Bitter cold winter months were very harsh for men from the country-side, usually digging vegetables. The winter season and frozen grounds made it hard to find work. Many laborious came into London looking for anything they could find to earn some money. Half a dozen men shooting out in chorus holding long poles with frozen greens on top, parading the streets asking people for any jobs like pea rodding and pruning. Date: 1850
