First Lesson in the Goose Step
A small scrawny goose leading Germen troops, in a goose-stepping lesson. Heath Robinson produced a large number of drawings for the Sketch during World War I, poking fun at the German army and showing a lighter side to war. The goose in the picture is similar to a small bird which regularly appeared as a kind of personal signature in Heath Robinson drawings during the early part of his career. Robinson was a regular contributor to the Sketch, the Bystander and other ILN titles during his lifetime. His weekly drawings featuring mind-boggling contraptions and designs were immensely popular.
