King George V and Queen Mary, accompanied by the Prince of Wales and Princess Mary, in a carriage at the Crystal Palace for the opening of the Festival of Empire on 12th May 1911. On arrival, the Royal party heard a concert, in which 4500 voices took part, and then drove around the grounds, reviewing the 12000 performers who were to enact the Pageant of London.
