Eve goes to the cinema by Annie Fish

Eve, and her beau, Reggie, are shown the way into a cinema by an usherette and are pleasantly surprised to see how dark - and private - the auditorium is. Cinemas were considered potential dens of iniquity during the First World War! As an entertainment that took place in the dark, there were concerns that it might damage the moral fabric of the nation, and a Council for Public Morals lobbied for stricter censorship, while supervisors were installed in picture houses to ensure no indecent behaviour took place in the cheap seats. Date: 1918
