Effigy of T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia)
Carved stone effigy (detail) of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia, 1888-1935), British Army officer best known for his liaison role during the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916-1918. It is in St Martins Church, Wareham, Dorset, and was made by Eric Kennington. Lawrence is in full Arab dress, with his head resting on a camel saddle. Kennington was an official war artist in both World Wars. He was a friend of Lawrence s, and was one of the pall bearers at his funeral. Date: circa late 1930s
