The Drummer of Tedworth - Glanville
The tale of the Drummer of Tedworth (told by Thomas Glanville) recounted that local landowner, John Mompesson of Tedworth (now Tidworth, in Wiltshire), had accused a local drummer of extortion of money by false pretences. Further to winning the case, Mompesson discovered his house was plagued by drumming noises at night, which were assumed to have been inflicted on the unfortunate landowner by the drummer through witchcraft. A possible early documented example of a poltergeist. Date: 1681
