Disaster at the Mouth of the Mersey off the north west lightship - the cutter-rigged steamer Lelia commanded by Captain Skinner foundering with the loss of 20 lives. She was carrying 700 tonnes of coal and bound for Bermuda. The Liverpool lifeboat was upset in attempting to rescue the Lelias crew with the loss of seven of the lifeboatmen. Date: 1865
