Compagnie Forest - Armistice World War One
A sign in the forest of Compiegne marks the site where the Armistice between the Allies and Germany which ended World War I was signed on 11th November 1918. The French commander-in-chief Marshal Foch convened the armistice talks here (the signing took place within a railway carriage) with an eye towards secrecy to shield the meeting from intrusive journalists or any hostile demonstrations. Date: circa 1910s
