Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake, VC
Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake, VC and Bar, VD, FRCS (4 April 1874 22 June 1953), English double recipient of the Victoria Cross. He was first awarded the VC in 1902 during the Second Boer War. While serving as a surgeon-captain in the South African Constabulary, he treated wounded soldiers under fire during an action at Vlakfontein. He was shot three times and refused water until his comrades had been offered some. He won his second V.C. at the age of 40 in November 1914 while serving with Royal Army Medical Corps near Zonnebeke, Belgium. He rescued a number of wounded soldiers stranded close to German trenches despite coming under constant fire. What a guy! Date: 1920
