The Clock road house, Welwyn, Herts 1920s
The Clock, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, one of a number of so-called road houses that were established along major road routes out of London during the inter-war years. They variously offered dining, dancing, cocktails, swimming and other leisure facilities as well as services for the motorist - petrol, mechanics and parking. See picture number 12693747 for the Clock a few years earlier. This picture shows expansion of the site including increased parking, a signal of the growing car ownership, and the resulting popularity of the roadhouse during the period. Date: early 1930s
