Back to Civilisation. The Second in Command at Lyttelton
Commander Evans, the Second in Command of the British Antarctic expedition of Captain Scott, pictured with the two men who saved his life when he was struck down with scurvy. Evans had a very severe journey from the polar plateau. Owing to the party being one man short the work of hauling the sledge taxed his strength, which was weakened by Lieutenant Evans developing scurvy. His condition daily became more serious until he was unable to move forward any further. Crean set out alone to cover thirty miles to Discovery Hut, where he succeeded in obtaining a relief party. Lashley remained behind to nurse his commanding officer
