China - Jiujiang - HMS Gnat - March 1920
Jiujiang (formerly transliterated Kiukiang or Kew Keang) a prefecture-level city located on the southern shores of the Yangtze River in northwest Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China. Seen here are British Navy sailors being ferried by ocal boatmen back to the HMS Gnat, a River Gunboat, Insect-class - which operated out of the China Station (including Yangste River) between June 1918 to December 1920. This photograph can be accurately dated to March 1920 by examining the log books of the HMS Gnat (available online), which reports it was stationed at Jiujiang to quell a riot/uprising between 16th March and 3rd April 1920. Date: 1920
