The Census 1931
The printing - counting - sorting machine newly constructed to assist in the collection of census information in 1931. Once staff had converted the basic information into numerical codes, recorded on punch cards, this machine would process over 20, 000 such cards an hour. However, the card punching process itself would take a year, as 40 million cards would be needed. Date: April 1931
