Carnoles - Cap Martin - France
Carnol賠 - Cap Martin - France - Took the bus towards Menton, getting off at the little village of Cap Martin. After much hunting found two double rooms in a villa which had closed for the season but which let us in. We went for a dip on the deserted beach before supper. This afternoon walked up to pill boxes defending the beachhead. We walked around three of them, with guns still in one of them. It was horrible looking down the barrels. One of the turrets had cute little doors that would shut off the shooting. They could swing around so that it would be half open or any way possible. This town was taken 3 times, by the Italians, Germans and Americans. However, only the homes around the fortifications are bombed out. The next morning we were told there are still unexploded shells above the town. Date: 1951
