Caricature of Charles Beresford, First Baron Beresford
Caricature of Charles William de la Poer Beresford, First Baron Beresford (1846-1919) - an officer of the Royal Navy - by Phil May. In 18989 Beresford visited China on an investigative mission for the Associated Chambers of Commerce. One of his indiscreet speeches led Salisbury to comment " C.B. is an ass" and published his report, The Break-up of China (1899), advocating British reassertion of the " open door", and Chinese reforms, and warning against the Russian threat. This is likely to be the reason for Beresford being pictured here seemingly lampooning a Chinese puppet. Date: 1898
